Our Leadership

Dr. Brian Fairman, Co-Chair AIARI, has lived and worked in Indonesia and Timor-Leste for more than a decade. Dr Fairman worked for the Government of Timor-Leste developing a national plan for a national vocational education and training system, providing policy advice and technical advice on physical and social infrastructure requirements for the design and ongoing implementation of a national training system. In Indonesia, Dr Fairman has focused on vocational educational reform and human capability development as well as conducting leadership and specialised training programs for mid-level public servant management. Brian has also worked in the Australian University sector for; James Cook University, Victoria University, The University of Queensland and The University of Melbourne managing numerous aid and development projects. Dr Fairman and Dr Voak, have recently edited and published a Book on Developing a Culturally Relevant Workforce in Indonesia, focusing on human capability development and western models of engagement.

Assoc. Prof. Suparto, CoChair is based in Malang, Indonesia, is an experienced academic and administrator at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) with a various significant positions, including Special Staff of Minister for Public Communication and International Relations at Ministry of Education and Culture – Republic Indonesia, Jakarta, Rector of the Institute of Teknologi Sain dan Kesehatan Sugeng Hartono in Sukoharjo Central Java, Assistant Rector for International Accreditation at UMM, and Senior Advisor for the Collaboration Board of East Java Board of Leaders of Muhammadiyah. His extensive collaboration experience includes roles with international institutions like the European Union’s Erasmus programs, the US Embassy’s American Corner, US Peace Corps, and Australian Consortium for In Country Indonesian Studies (ACICIS). He has also coordinated initiatives like the Garuda Shield (Collaboration between US Army and Indonesian Soldiers) community service program. Prof. Suparto is known for his adaptability and teamwork, often engaging in innovative and forward-thinking projects.
